Previously, she was Artemis of Greek Mythology. Artemis was the goddess of the hunt, the wilderness, wild animals, the Moon, and virgins (in those days, any unmarried women). She was the patron and protector of young girls, and was believed to bring disease upon women and relieve them of it. Artemis was also worshipped as one of the primary goddesses of childbirth and midwifery. She was the daughter of Zeus and Leto and twin sister to Apollo; she was born first, acting as her mother's midwife as she gave birth to Apollo. Artemis, while sitting on the knee of her father, Zeus, asked him to grant her several wishes: 1. to always remain a virgin; 2. to have many names to set her apart from her brother Phoebus (Apollo); 3. to have a bow and arrow made by the Cyclops; 4. to be the Phaesporia or Light Bringer; 5. to have a knee-length tunic so that she could hunt; 6. to have sixty "daughters of Okeanos", all nine years of age, to be her choir; 7. to have twenty Amnisides Nymphs as handmaidens to watch her dogs and bow while she rested; 8. to rule all the mountains; 9. any city; and 10. to have the ability to help women in the pains of childbirth. Many gods and men wanted Artemis and tried to have her, which usually ended very badly for them, as it did for anyone who tried the same with any of her devotees. The only one who succeeded was Orion, Artemis' hunting companion, and it ended badly for him too, unfortunately.
Now she's Ayala Cohen, 31. Ayala was born in Israel to an American mother and Israeli father and holds dual citizenship. As a child her favorite games were hide and seek and tag, and she loved running after her family's dogs. She had a fairly coed group of friends, even in those years where most kids think everyone else has cooties, probably due to how close she was with her twin brother, Aharon. If the boys tried to push the girls around, Ayala stepped in to protect those who needed it and taught the ones who wanted to learn how to punch. She was 13 when she met her first girlfriend, who was walking home alone and being teased by a group of boys near the sports fields where Ayala was practicing. At 15 her first boyfriend was one of the boys she'd grown up with, the literal boy next door. And as she turned into an adult, she played sports and she loved lingerie and she wanted to run and be wild. No one knew what to do with her, because she never comfortably fit in any one box, but Ayala never cared. All she wanted was to be free.
After her mandatory service in the IDF, Ayala became a personal trainer. She was 24 when she met her husband, Matthew. Ayala had never intended to get married, to settle down, but love makes you do crazy things. He was American, in Israel on business, and she moved to the States with him, to his hometown of New Orleans. She worked in a couple of different gyms until he helped her buy her own, which she turned into an all-women's gym. They were lovingly poly, which was probably the thing that convinced her that she could make marriage work, and they often invited thirds to join them. They'd both agreed not to see other people on their own, but it turned out that Matthew just wanted Ayala to himself while he continued seeing people on the side. Ayala left him after she found out, took the gym and a decent alimony with her, and made a new life for herself. In the middle of last year she went back to Israel to help her mother, who was sick, and is only just now returning to New Orleans. She left her gym in capable hands, but she's glad she's back to run it and to reconnect with the people she temporarily left behind.
Ayala is currently unaware.
